Maximizing Space in Your Corporate Rental

Posted on Tuesday, May 17, 2022

Your corporate rental is wonderful in a lot of ways—you've got access to  amenities, it's just a short walk to many of DC's coolest attractions, it's steps away from the DC Metro—but it doesn't quite have the space you enjoy while you're at home; what can you do to maximize your space during your long-term business travel? Here are some tips for making the most of your space in your corporate rental.

Will your business require you to be in DC for 30 days or more? Browse our furnished temporary apartments to find the most spacious apartment to call home during your trip.

Pack Lightly

The most efficient way to maximize your space is to bring as little as possible. Yes, you're planning to be in DC for awhile, but that doesn't mean that you need to bring a Uhaul's worth of stuff to make you feel like you're at home. Instead, bring a carefully curated collection of items that will evoke feelings of home without overcrowding you. Better yet, make these items useful; for example, bring your favorite pillow or a cozy blanket. Not only will they make you feel closer to your home, but it's something you're going to use anyway. Snuggle up with your blanket and bask in your practicality as well as it's warmth.

Choose Your Rental Carefully

When you're deciding where you're going to live for the foreseeable future, take a hard look at their amenities. Do they offer everything you need, or are you expected to bring your own supplies? For example, a good rental will have a kitchen fully stocked with cooking implements that are suited to your space; you won't need to bring your own pots, pans, bowls, or knives. Does the apartment have a washer and dryer in the unit? If so, it'll be more convenient to do your laundry, so you won't have to bring as many clothes, saving space in your closet.

Stay Organized

This will be easier if you take our initial advice and pack lightly, but regardless, you'll still need to keep your things neat and tidy. If you're planning a visit that will span more than one season, bring tubs you can store under the bed to hold your clothing for the next season. This will keep it out of your closet and dresser, maximizing space for the items you're currently wearing without overcrowding them.  Keeping your items organized will also help you avoid duplication, which will not only save you space, but also money.

Go Digital

Do you love to read? Invest in an e-reader, like a Kindle or a Nook, and load it with as many books as you can handle. This will save you a ton of space in your luggage as well as on your nightstand. (Pro tip— many public libraries loan digital books, so you can download books for free!) Can't live without music? Load up an MP3 player or your smartphone with digital tunes, and you can enjoy your tunes anywhere, anytime without taking up any space. You can get digital magazine subscriptions, which will not only save space but save paper as well. You can read them on your tablet, which, if you're like most of us, you've got with you wherever you go anyway, so you'll never be without reading material in your downtime. If you love to spend your evening with a bowl of popcorn and a great movie, good news! You don't have to drag your DVD collection with you; instead, you can download movies digitally and utilize any number of devices, from Apple TV to the Kindle Fire stick, to watch them on your TV. Or, invest in a streaming subscription, such as Netflix or Hulu— you can enjoy movies as well as television shows, and you're sure to find something to suit any mood.

Hopefully, these tricks will help you maximize space in your corporate rental and enhance your stay in the DC Metro area.
